How to Find the Right Job for Your Ideal Life.

Does this sound like you? Rapidly approaching the final chapter of high school only to be flooded with doubts about the direction you’ve decided to take your future or you just have no clue what comes next. Believe me I’ve been there. This situation simultaneously makes life scary and exciting but lets dive into how we can make it enjoyable.

First I want to start off by saying you don’t have to be in high school to feel this way and chances are you will repeatedly feel as though you’re making the wrong choice or that you’re missing out. From my experience that is natural. Learn to be comfortable in the uncomfortable. You merely can’t do everything, after all you’re only human. If I was going to guess the root cause of this feeling, it would boil down to a single method of thinking. The primary method of comparison which I think most of us are aware of at this point which stems from worrying too much about what others are doing. You’re more than welcome to DM on IG here if you disagree. The point of all this is if you’re spending to much time comparing or obsessing you’re not taking the time to reflect or take action. It’s in reflection where you discover what you want from life. A major portion of your life will be work which bleeds into all the other elements of your existence. Keep reading if you want more guidance.

Essentially you want to push all the clutter aside and make an obvious path forward that feels right. The important thing to take note of here is that it only needs to feel right to you. This is a major reason why comparison and obsession is so harmful. The feeling is based on the information you have have in the specific moment of time. Here are some questions to ask yourself to help narrow down what you want out of life. Keep in mind as we grow as people these things change and these questions should be reflected on often to make minor course corrections over a long period of time to avoid midlife crisis and major life pivots in the future.

Questions:

  1. What does the ideal version of myself look like in the future?

    • Be ultra specific here. What are you wearing? How do you confront people? Are you social? What is your confidence like? How do you make decisions? Where do you live? How many hours a day/week are you working? What are your priorities? What job are you working? Do you have a family? Do you have pets? How do you treat others?

  2. What do you not want in your life?

    • Start eliminating the things you know you don’t like. For some this is easier than claiming the things in life you like. A process of elimination will give you a jump start on finding a job that fits your ideal life.

  3. What type of things do you have an aptitude for?

    • Aptitude: a natural ability to do something.

    • Chance are you’re naturally better at certain things over others. This could be because the way your brain works and how you work through things. Define what those are. One of them might line up with the above question.

The above is just the framework for you to build off of.

Once you have clear answers for the information above you have a foundation or blueprint to use moving forward. This isn’t to say that it will resolve all your problems but it’s a good place to get started. If you take the information above about your future self and use it to help you make decisions in your current circumstances you slowly close the gap. You’ve established a clear heading. Whether your heading is driven from avoiding what you don’t want or working toward what you do want. This inches you closer in a direction that feels right to you.
