Do The Work…

Okay, here’s the rub. The only thing getting in the way of what you want are these two things. The first first one is actually doing the work. For me this is a realization that it’s going to be tougher than I originally thought. I mean it’s okay because I’m committed to making it happen, but man what am I volunteering myself for. I think it’s easy to get ahead of yourself and see where others are at, whether they are younger than you and further along the same journey that you’re aspiring to take or just further along in general. Don’t try to eat the whole apple at once. Just start with the first bite. I mean the real success that yuo should dedicate yourself to is growth. The process of getting better. Can you look back and say, “yeah I pursued this thing and today I got better.” Can you take a step back in the middle of your journey and say, “I know that I am better today than when I started.” Those two reminders are important to continue on when things don’t feel like they are moving.

My wife and I had a conversation about feeling stuck. To us the “right” decision doesn’t feel 100% correct. All of our options feel average at best for the next steps in our family. So until we feel like there is a better decision we are working towards our long term goal. Obviously we want things to go faster but I am leaving that in the hand of the universe because right now any decision we make feels mediocre at best. With that said the goals we are working towards aren’t super exciting and I compared it to the growth of bamboo. Bamboo takes five years to grow a strong root system. You won’t see any growth above the soil in that time. It will, from above soil, appear as if nothing is happening. After year five you will see bamboo shoot up to full growth in about five weeks. My message being just because we aren’t seeing the growth we want, at the speed we want doesn’t mean things aren’t happening.

The second thing is as equally as important as the first and I actually touched on it in above. That is to keep going. Consistency is being able to do the work day in and day out. This is where I generally struggle because I have a rush of passion and obsess over something. Put a lot of work in up front and lose interest when either, I find something new, or things aren’t happening as fast as I want them to. I recognize that this is a me problem and this is what I will be working on over the course of my life because I am dedicated to making this “dream” of mine happen. Over the course of all my ambitions I have run into the same issue over, and over, and over again. Now that I recognize it I can start tackling it head on.

Wish me luck.
